HERBAL MEDICINE
Herbal Medicine
Administered by Master Herbalist Bonnie D'Arcangelo
I have over 17 years of experience working with and growing herbal medicine dating back to 2007 when I moved out to rural Wisconsin and lived off the land in a log cabin built by the Amish. My love for all things natural didn’t end when I moved back to “civilization.” I continued my education and working with plants until I decided to make my training more “formal” and earn my degree. I hold a Master’s of Science degree in Herbal Medicine from the American College of Healthcare Sciences in Portland, OR. Visit www.ACHS.edu for more information.
Phytotherapy is the use of plants for medicine and is a tradition as old as time. Some of our oldest records of herbal medicine date back to Ancient Greece and the physician Pedanius Dioscorides and his famous work De Materia Medica. Many advances have been made in herbal medicine since his time. We now rely heavily on science-based evidence to identify and determine the use of individual plant constituents. While science may have pulled apart the plants and identified their individual pieces, true holistic herbal medicine still uses whole plant remedies for their synergistic value.
Each plant has a unique blend of constituents that can influence the body in several different ways. One plant may be both an astringent (tightens the tissues) and a diuretic. Knowing how to use the right herb for not just one of it’s actions but all of it’s actions combined is the art of herbal medicine. As plant medicine becomes more popular it is even more important that qualified herbal practitioners help to guide the public in the safe and effective use of herbs. Many people think that because something is plant-based it is automatically safe. While herbal medicine is usually safer and has fewer side effects than many drug therapies, that does not mean that there are no potential side effects or dangers.
At Veusebeia I offer tailored phytotherapy plans that take into consideration your whole person. This allows us to create a blended therapy plan that works in conjunction with your standard treatments from your primary care physician. Through this method we can ensure your health and safety and that there are no herb-drug or herb-herb interactions. Everything we put into our body must be metabolized to be used, this includes herbs. Understanding the science and toxicology behind plants is the work of a true clinical herbalist. My training and education are in physiology and toxicology and an understanding of plant constituents and synergistic effects.
Some of my clients come to me with big health issues and are seeking natural ways to deal with their diagnosis from their doctors. I work together with their primary care physicians to ensure that they receive a treatment plan that addresses their health issues and is safe and effective. This blended philosophy is different than a this or that mindset. Both allopathic and natural medicine can and should work together for the health and wellness of all people.

I love nature, and just as we can help nature to thrive, so can nature help us to survive.
Being an herbalist is more than just giving people herbs, it is a love for the plants themselves.
